Visit from Marcel and Nana

We had a four-day visit during that was probably the area’s first frost. Here are some pictures! Big updates: we got lots of wood thanks to Marcel and his chainsaw Nina and Marcel put in stairs down to the outhouse Liam worked almost the whole time on a funding proposal ūüė¶ Advertisements

Thanksgiving weekend

A short and sweet blog post… Thanksgiving weekend, we were joined by most of the Fab 5, including Costa, Leanne, Eleni – and notably addition 18-month-old Emile from Yellowknife. I think we witnessed¬†the single sharpest¬†downturn in temperature this Fall. The first day was shorts and t-shirts weather and the morning we left was 3C. The…

Sleepy, rainy visit

We had medium-high hopes that our visit this weekend would result in a fully installed wood stove (Liam) and fully¬†patched and¬†painted walls (Nina), but, well, it didn’t. A few setbacks (mostly in terms of lack of supplies) meant we didn’t follow¬†all the way through with our plans, but still, we got a lot done and…

Last summer visit before school

Somehow, it’s been about two weeks since the last Estate visit and nearly two months since we were there alone to focus on getting stuff done. Leading up today, we spent our last extended weekend at the Estate before classes start up. There was a sense of urgency because the next visit will be nearly…

Visit from a German

This is a short and sweet update. After Nina cancelled a work party, I (Liam) went through with a visit as planned and had a few handy grad students and German friend (Sebastian) also up. Sebastian is visiting Canada for three weeks as part of a conference I hosted in Ottawa. A few highlights: It’s…

Mother/mother-in-law O’Brien visit

We had yet another action-filled three-day weekend with Liam’s Mum. The weekend started on a Thursday evening, when we ate dinner at the Cove Inn. We drove around a lot of the small towns (Westport, Perth, Delta, Forfar). After she left, we put in a solid half-day of work. Here are a few highlights of…

Laing-Vega and Doré visit, Prickly Ash, and Pex

We had yet another wonderful weekend at the estate last weekend. We got, not one, but two visitors. First, Nina’s parents, cousin, Najwa, and her boyfriend, Stu (both from England) visited just for the day. They drove 8 hours or so for a 4 hour visit! Besides eating the delicious bakery goods from Pan Chancho,…

Just a small aside

I stopped off for a quick Trash Nothing pick-up just now and met the nicest lady. Her name is Shannon and she was cleaning out her garage and finding all kinds of fun stuff to give away to leeches like me. I got lucky enough to pick up some shelves (track shelves, I think they’re…

Chris (aka Xander) digs and digs and digs

The estate’s¬†first non-family visitor, Chris (aka Xander), came last week, Monday-Wednesday. We loaded up the car and stopped off at Freshco (remember how much we love Freshco?) for a bunch of vegetables and sausage and beer and bam, estate home, sweet estate home. We got to the cabin and made a game plan: we’d chill…

Mango canoe

Today (Sunday of Canada Day long weekend) we spontaneously decided to go buy a canoe and paddle it home. The two places to get canoes are about 10 km of paddling and 3-4 km of portaging through city streets. 10 minutes after entering the store, we left with our mango-coloured 16′ canoe.

Painting visit #1

I say #1 because even a full day of up and down the loft ladder and back and forth from kitchen to living room wasn’t enough to finish more than about half of the painting I wanted to get done. And that was just a couple of small areas! The tricky thing we’re finding out…

First human visitor!

We had our first human visitor – Katie (Liam’s sister) – and longest stay¬†so far, at 4 days. Most of the time was spent moving ahead on existing projects, cleaning up, and shopping for new tools and supplies. The cabin is actually livable now and the furniture is more or less arranged in its final…
